Homes Under Construction in Frio Cañon

Tony Martin Design/Build of Fredericksburg, Texas is building a retreat for a family and their children and grandchildren. The four-building plan includes casitas for guests and expansive areas for entertaining and enjoying the home’s perch on a bluff above the Frio River. A slideshow of recent construction on the house is available here.

Frio and the Family

For a homeowner currently building a Shiflet Group Architects-designed vacation home in Frio Cañon, the variety of activities available to him and his family, all four seasons of the year, was valuable. The topography of the Texas Hill Country, married with the deep, cool and clear water of the Frio River, create a setting where his children can explore, actively entertaining themselves.

The ability to use the property year round was a consideration, as well as the location close to Austin and San Antonio. “Having a home a little over two hours away means that we can pick up and go for the weekend,” he said. “It also means that I can share the experience with family and friends more easily. Frio Cañon is going to be part of my family’s traditions.”

Frio Cañon is not only an idyllic spot, but a practical one as well. While an emotional connection with the beauty of this hill country land along the Frio River is inevitable, one must also consider the practical aspects of owning a family vacation home.

The Meadow at Frio Cañon

This month marks the launch of the Casitas, cottage-inspired homes that will be situated throughout the Frio Cañon’s 125-acre wilderness preserve. These homes, which start at $350,000, will enjoy the full amenities of the Frio Cañon community. These amenities, to name a few, include the deep-water Homestead park on the Frio River, activities ranging from kayaking to flyfishing, and the services of a full-time property management team.

The cottage-inspired designs of the Frio Cañon Casitas were created to complement one another and the surrounding landscape. Arrangements of up to three structures on each home site offer a variety of configurations for entertaining and relaxing. Porches and landscaped areas with native plantings provide places to sit and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding hills and nearby river.

Charles Travis of Austin-based architecture firm Chas Architects has created several designs including The Homestead, a 1,500-square-foot, two- story home with two bedrooms, two and half baths, a full kitchen, dining and living room areas, and a large back porch; The Bunkhouse, a 600-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath cottage intended for younger members of a family; and the Guest and Master Cabañas, which are private one-bedroom suites.

Check out what we have planned for the Old Homestead Park:

Thanks to the Regents School of Austin Football Team, the Old Homestead Park is now fenced off. Swing by and check out the new outdoor movie setup where you can enjoy the football game or a movie for the kids. A large number of picnic tables now provide lots of shaded seating and the perfect place for grilling out. The Red House now located across from the Frio River Cottages will be moved to the park towards the end of the year.

Meet the Founders of Frio Cañon, a Texas Hill Country Retreat

From the earliest stages, Frio Cañon has been a labor of love. David Dalgleish, owner of Austin-based Dalgleish Construction Company, discovered the land that is now Frio Cañon in 2007 while looking for a plot of land to build vacation cottages for his family. He was looking for an easily accessible retreat where his wife and five daughters (and eventually their families) could spend holidays and vacations together. He wanted the privacy of a traditional ranch, but one without the sense of isolation that often doesn’t appeal to youngsters. Instead, he wanted nearby activities – hunting, fly fishing, swimming – that would encourage youthful activity and make the second home a place where the children would want to spend time.

When Dalgleish came upon an old ranch for sale, the land that would eventually become Frio Cañon, it was love at first sight. At its center were the crystal-clear headwaters of the Frio River. The panorama included rolling hills and the Frio River Valley.

Soon after purchasing part of the ranch, Dalgleish learned that the remaining ranch land was going to be developed into a high-density, low-end subdivision. If actualized, the project would negatively impact not only the scenery but also the wildlife. It was then that Dalgleish conceived Frio Cañon. He contacted Black, a long-time friend who had recently retired and was looking for a new venture. Together, they purchased the rest of the ranch property, including a mountain now dedicated to wildlife preservation. Dalgleish and Black would now be able to offer like-minded families and friends a Central Texas haven of their own.

Today, the Dalgleish family visits their home on the Frio River regularly. For Dalgleish and his wife, this pristine segment of the Texas Hill Country is the perfect antidote to the frenzied pace of city life. For their children, it is an ideal spot for hanging out with friends, while sitting around a campfire or tubing down the Frio River. The Dalgleish family hopes you’ll visit Frio Cañon, and if you’re in the market for a second home, join the Frio Cañon family.

Event Recap: 4th Of July at Frio Cañon in the Texas Hill Country

Summers in the Texas Hill Country are full of special events and holidays. The recent 4th of July holiday was filled with fun on the Frio River.

The weekend started off with everyone at Frio Cañon Friday evening prepping the float for the Fourth of July Parade, which took place in Leakey on Saturday morning. Evening entertainment was the Garner State Park Dance for some, while others chose to stay on the property and have a sing-along at the Frio D cabin.

Saturday morning started with breakfast then the float was hitched to a white ’65 Chevy covered with “I Love Leakey” stickers. The Dalgleish family pulled the float in the parade through downtown Leakey, tossing candy and stickers to the crowd. The parade consists of over 100 homemade floats and takes place every 4th of July in Leakey. It’s followed by an Arts and Crafts Fair at the Leakey Town Square.

Following the parade and fair, Frio Cañon guests cooled off by kayaking, swimming and floating in the Frio River. The Frio Cañon community encompasses approximately 180 acres including a wildlife conservation area, the Frio River, a community park and creek side and waterfront home sites.

Sunday morning was welcomed with a morning riverside service followed by another day of recreational fun on the Frio River. Guests enjoyed a cookout in the riverside Community Park and a trick roping show by Kevin and Bud Fitzpatrick of Bandera.

The weekend ended with a feast of ribs and all the fixings compliments of the Frio Cañon property manager, Rene Martinez.

The next happening at Frio Cañon will be a moonrise, which will take place the weekend of August 13th and 14th.

Event Recap: Memorial Day in the Texas Hill Country at Frio Cañon (Leakey)

Memorial Day in Leakey, Texas is always a big weekend for Frio Cañon homeowners and their guests, and this year was no exception.

The weekend started out with an all-you-can-eat shrimp boil at the Frio Canyon Lodge Outdoor Pavilion in downtown Leakey on Saturday night, followed by a night on the town. Some folks opted for live music with Gary P. Nunn at House Pasture Cattle Company in ConCan, while others chose to attend the Summer Family Dance, an event that takes place every Saturday evening at Garner State Park.

On Sunday, a Riverside Devotional Service was held at a homeowners’ property at Frio Cañon followed by a day of fun on the Frio River. Guests and homeowners’ families enjoyed kayaking, tubing, swimming, fly-fishing and exploring a slice of the Texas Hill Country. The day was filled with fun and food including a mid-day cookout with hamburgers and hot dogs on the bank of the Frio River in the Community Park and property manager Rene’s famous ribs. Sunday ended on a high note with a folk song sing-along, outdoor movies for the kids, star gazing and good company on the Frio Cañon property.

On Monday, guests ventured out to explore the Texas Hill Country on their own. Some chose to stay close to the property by playing a round of golf at The Club atConCan or enjoying lunch at one of the area’s favorite Tex-Mex joints, Mama Chole’s. Some even took day trips to surrounding areas to explore all that the Texas Hill Country has to offer. With the clear, deep Frio River running through the property and so many sites within a short drive – Vanderpool’s Lonestar Motorcycle Museum, Utopia’s craft and antique shops, Garner State Park, Camp Wood Texas and more, there’s never a shortage of things to do.

Easter on the Frio

This past week, one of our property owners took the time to tell us about his family Easter at Frio Cañon. For those of us here at Frio Cañon, it's hard to picture a better family get together than right here, at Frio Cañon. Marc spent Easter weekend with his daughter and son-in-law, enjoying evenings "listening to the river sounds, frogs and crickets" from the back porch of the Model Cottage and mornings walking the river, landing a whopping catch of 14 fish, for "much needed relief from the hustle and bustle of Houston." We may not have as much luck as Marc and the family, but we are grateful he released his bounty of bass, perch and catfish back into the river for the rest of us to enjoy!

Marc is currently building his own home on the Frio River and it is coming along nicely. In between meeting with contractors, he was able to take a cold dip in the Frio. As Marc remarked, "Why is it that a tube, a beverage and a cool crystal clear river seem to be the perfect ingredients for great conversations?" The evening was rounded out with an afternoon hike up the mountain to take in the "spectacular" sunset over the mountains to the West and dinner accompanied by "stories" and the recovery of "long-forgotten memories." We couldn't agree more with Marc when he exclaimed that it was "a great day for a Dad to spend with his family!"

Marc described his Easter morning, enjoying services at a local service, on the banks of the Frio River, under the second largest Cypress Tree in North America. The Concan Baptist Missionary Church conducted the morning service which had over 200 people attend. Following the service, a Cowboy Chuckwagon breakfast was served, then several people were baptized in the river. Marc described this as "a cherished morning of worship and singing of some of the old hymns I remember my Dad singing when I was a child." On the drive home to Frio Cañon, Marc sang hymns with his family and admits: "I don’t think we were ever on key, but we sure laughed a lot."

How excited we are to hear when property owners and friends can experience Frio Cañon in the way that we do: as a place for family and cherished memories. Marc, we agree with you when you say that Frio Cañon is truly a place "where the simple things of life really are the best things." We are grateful to be a part of a place as special as Frio Cañon and grateful to be a part of the memories you are adding to your Treasure Chest! Thanks for sharing your Frio experience!

Get to Know the Hill Country: Places to Eat (Part Two)

It is another beautiful day in the Texas Hill Country and what could be better than enjoying this sunny weather, a beautiful view of rolling hills AND eating great food? If you're a fan of this combination, then be grateful you live in, near, around or have access to the Texas Hill Country! If you've got some time on your hands this upcoming weekend, I highly suggest making a trip out to see the amazing things Texas has to offer, including lunch and dinner breaks at any of the places we highlight today.

Not all of us have access to large cities with five-star restaurants, but we know that good food is good food, regardless of where you find it. We're happy to say that even fancy-schmancy, upscale foodie magazines like Bon Appetit recognize that. In May 2009, they honored The Leakey Feedlot for serving up one of the top plates in America. Only one cafe was recognized per state, so this is kind of a big deal! They were recognized specifically for their chicken fried (rib-eye) steak, which I have to say is simply amazing. In addition to the chicken fried steak, this cafe offers up a variety of great traditional cafe favorites. The decor is as authentically country as the food- this is truly a Texan meal. On a sunny day, you can't beat lunch or dinner on the patio with friends and family.

If you are a fan of southern favorites in relaxed, beautiful environments, you cannot skip out on an opportunity to eat at The Gristmill. Located in Gruene, Texas, one of my personal favorite places on earth, this restaurant is situated neatly between Austin and San Antonio. It is the perfect dinner spot if you've spent the day floating the Guadalupe River and need a place to unwind before hitting up Gruene Hall for some of the best live music in Texas. The Gristmill features indoor and outdoor seating and a killer, river's edge view of the Guadalupe. I've never had a meal here I didn't enjoy. The surroundings are super laid-back and even the wait for your table is a relatively enjoyable experience. The outdoor beer garden is the perfect place to enjoy an ice cold beer or margarita when their is a wait.

The last restaurant on our list is Chicken Earl's. Chicken Earl isn't exactly a restaurant, rather a trailer that can be found in downtown Leakey that sells AMAZING fried chicken. If you live in the Austin area, you likely have visited one of the many food trailers popping up all over the city. In fact, these trailers happen to have some of the BEST, reasonably priced, but high quality eats in the entire city. It seems to be the same for Chicken Earl's. Their chicken is the talk of the town in Leakey (and beyond) and they've been around since WAY before food trailers were cool. They've got the trailer food thing down to a science. They're open ONLY on Tuesdays and until they completely sell out. In the summer time, that can sometimes be pretty early, as people drive from all around to get a taste of their chicken. Get out there early because this is some chicken you have got to try! We can't recommend them enough!

Now I know that there are a plethora of restaurants that have been left off of this list. If you have any other suggestions, send them our way. Make sure to check out these Texas Hill Country businesses and let us know what you think of them. Happy Eating!

Get to Know the Hill Country: Places to Eat

Hello and welcome to the second part of our Get to Know the Hill Country series! Today, we thought it would be great to discuss some of our absolute favorite places to enjoy delicious food. Let's be honest, we all love food. Every single one of us. Especially me. Even if you're a health-nut, you recognize the value of great ingredients and unique flavors (I am tempted to use the term "flavor profile" here because I hear it all of the time on cooking shows and I think it might make me sound more intelligent and knowledgeable about food, but I'll be honest, I'm certainly not an expert and unless you are a professional, using the term "flavor profile" is ridiculous). The following places meet my criteria for good eats (tastes good, looks good, smells good) and I highly recommend you checking them out and partaking. Heck, bring a friend, bring the kids, bring the parents- this allows for stealing off of plates and getting a real bang for your buck when trying somewhere new.

I think it's a given that all people like Mexican food. If you don't, you're likely strange or you've never experienced the awesomeness that is a Mexican Martini (just sayin'). In the past, we've highlighted the super delicious Mama Chole's, right here in Leakey, but we would be wronging the public if we failed to mention them again. This spot is a family favorite. There's good food, kind people and most especially, no one cares if you're loud. This is key for my family. Keep in mind that Leakey is a dry county, so sadly there are no margaritas, but hey... that's what heading back to the ranch is for. Be sure to check it out.

On my drive to Leakey from Austin, Fredericksburg has always been a natural stopping place. It's a beautiful town with lots of great restaurants and bars, live music, museums and shopping. Sure the trip is really only about two and a half hours, but who doesn't like having the option of stopping mid-way through for some seriously amazing food to snack on? At breakfast time, Rather Sweet is the place to be. If we're being honest, we stop here really at any time of day. Their cinnamon rolls might be the most amazing thing I've ever experienced. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and use only organic and high-quality, local ingredients. It's no surprise then that Rather Sweet was featured in Food and Wine Magazine's "5 Weekend Escapes: The Texas Hill Country" as well as many other nationally known publications. If you don't have time to stop in for a full meal, just stop in for a little treat to take on the way. Their bakery is amazing!

Another personal favorite which has developed something of a cult-following among family and friends is The Peach Tree Cafe in Fredericksburg. What can I say about The Peach Tree? I have it programmed into my phone so I can call about fifteen minutes out and grab something to go when I'm in a hurry. I will even get something hours before it's time to eat and save it for later, when I've reached my final destination. Yes, it is that good. My personal favorite is the Super Good For You sandwich, a vegeterian creation far better than any other I have tasted in my lifetime. And I've tasted a lot. The key factor to this sandwich's success is the Super Good For You Bread, a whole-grain bread with all kinds of goodies inside, including cranberries, various nuts and seeds. It is quite simply amazing! And healthy, to boot! If you enjoy it as much as I do, you can always take a loaf with you on your way out, as they always have frozen loafs available for sale. I also highly recommend the sandwich platter, which contains three miniature versions of The Peach Tree's best sandwiches- jalapeno pimento cheese (my favorite), chicken salad and tuna salad. You really can't go wrong. Their teas and soups are always fabulous and vary every day, just like their lunch specials. You can enjoy all of this in a truly beautiful, peaceful and quaint setting- an old, colonial home (pictured above). Keep in mind that the restaurant is only open from 11 am until 2:30 every day except for Saturdays, when they are open until 3 pm. On your way out or if you find yourself waiting for a table (I've never waited longer than ten minutes), be sure to check out their store which features cookbooks, kitchen and home items and some really great snacks to take with you.

These are only three of the many restaurants I love. Next week, I'll be sure to feature a few more. Hopefully, you'll get the chance to check out all of these amazing places. We'd also love to hear your recommendations as well. Where are your favorite places to eat? What do you like to eat there? I'm especially looking for some great suggestions on fried chicken, so send 'em my way! Happy eats!

Get to Know the Hill Country

Today marks the beginning of a brand-new blog series entitled "Get to Know the Hill Country". For those of you who enjoy the beauty of the Texas Hill Country as much as Frio Cañon does, this will be the opportunity to learn about some places, events and activities in the area that you may not yet have had the opportunity to explore. We're going to begin with Garner State Park.

The land that makes of Garner State Park is found in Northern Uvalde county and was acquired by former U.S. Vice President John Nance Garner between 1934 and 1936. It totals almost 1,420 acres, ten of which are Frio River water acres. There is an abundance of wildlife on the land: axis and white-tail deer, turkey, dove, squirrels and much more. Vegetation is plentiful, with an abundance of various native trees, grasses and plants. Deep canyons, high mesas and carved limestone cliffs provide a vast array of geological features to explore.

The rock formations in this area are unique. The strata sequence features the Glen Rose formation, made up of a collection of limestone, shale, mar and siltstone beds on the bottom, with the Edwards formation, made up of strictly limestone, above. Don't be surprised to find the footprints of dinosaurs throughout the park, as they can be found in various areas where the Glen Rose formation peaks through.

The park is open 7 days a week, year-round, with the busiest season being during months with sunny weather. Visitors can participate in an array of activities. There is swimming and tubing in the Frio River, hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing and much more. For more information, check out Garner State Park's website. They are pretty good about keeping their events page updated as well, so keep checking back to see if they have something you and your family might be interested in.

Frio Canyon History

For those of you who love the Hill Country as much as we do, you may enjoy an article a friend of ours sent us this past week. In May of 2001, the Austin Chronicle published a story about the history of the Texas Hill Country and more specifically, the three cayons that make up the Hill Country: the Sabinal Canyon, the Nueces Canyon and the Frio Canyon. While this article is nine years old, it is still a gold-mine of facts about the area's history. It includes information about the Spanish and Anglo roots of the Hill Country and the vast indigenous Indian population that once flourished in the area. Additionally, look for the features on Garner State Park and Lost Maples. We highly recommend taking a look at the story when you've got some time. Check it out here.

This past Labor Day weekend proved to be one of the best so far this year at Frio Cañon. Not only did Big 12 football look great, with wins from Texas, Texas Tech and Texas A &M, but the weather was perfect! It was sunny and bright during the day and dropped into the 60s in the evening. We couldn't ask for much more! With all of the great rain we've had over the past few months, the landscaping at the Frio Cottages is looking beautiful. Be sure to check out the photo gallery for pictures. If you'd like more information on the cottages, you can contact Diane Eagan at (210)863-1739.
