This weekend, Thanksgiving will usher in the beginning of the holiday season. It's the time of over-eating, enjoying the family and parties, parties and more parties! What better place to celebrate the season than out in the Hill Country?
The month of October will be busier than ever at Frio Cañon. Not only will we be anxiously awaiting fall and catching as much football as possible, but we'll be at the following events:
With the upcoming Labor Day weekend, it's the perfect time to get the family out and enjoy the Hill Country! This weekend, there are events going on all over and you don't want to miss out! Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening, support Donna Blazek & the Frio Canyon Players by checking out a presentation of "Holey Moley, Double Trouble" at 8 pm at the American Legional Hall in Leakey. Tickets are available at the door for 5 bucks and 3 dollars for children under 12. This is a great opportunity to support local arts and have a few family-friendly laughs.
For those of you who love hopping on that bike, feeling the wind in your face and enjoying the incredible views of the Frio Canyon, make sure to check out the Hills and Harleys River Rally, October 22nd- 24th at the House Pasture Cattle Company Area in Concan, Texas. There will be events all day on Saturday. The bike show begins at 11 am, followed by a poker run at noon. Don't forget to check out the tattoo contest at 6 pm and enjoy the live music all day long.
At the beginning of this month, Regents School of Austin held their second-annual Football Retreat at Frio Cañon. The Junior Varsity and Varsity Football teams spent two days camping on the property. They enjoyed time together as a team preparing for the upcoming season and a little play time as well. In between tree swings into the Frio River, ridiculous haircuts for the Freshmen and tons of barbecue, the group also worked together to help build the stone curbs you see around the Frio Cañon property.
Obviously, we're big fans of the Frio River and if you're reading this, you likely are as well. Because we couldn't imagine a summer without floating the river, we want to take part in keeping the river we love so much clean. On Saturday, Septemeber 11th, Friends of the Frio, an organization created to help mantain the beauty and health of the Frio River, is sponsoring a river clean up. Traditionally, the clean-up has covered the area between Camp Live Oak and Concan, but this year, Frio Cañon is joining with Friends of the Frio to extend the area to...
Thanks to all who spent their Fourth of July with Frio Cañon! We were blessed to have a large number of families brave the wet weather and join us for a weekend of barbecue, fireworks and the Leakey Fourth of July Jubliee Parade with family and friends. We've recently updated the Frio Cañon website and that includes an update to our photo galleries. Make sure to stop in and check out some of the photos here and look for more in the upcoming newsletter, which should be out next week.
It is important for Frio Cañon to respect the history of Real County and particularly, to honor the area pioneers that helped form the roots of the local community. Therefore, we are planning to dedicate the Frio Cañon Bridge in honor of local pioneer, Sabra Adeline Mear. The bridge will be named "Granny Mear Bridge". Sabra's son, John Mear, went to Germany and married Maria Mear, who still oversees ranching operations at the John Mear Ranch, which at one point, included the land we now call Frio Cañon. Below, see a photo of Sabra Adline "Granny Mear" around 1910, in...
