Frio and the Family

Posted by on March 08, 2012

For a homeowner currently building a Shiflet Group Architects-designed vacation home in Frio Cañon, the variety of activities available to him and his family, all four seasons of the year, was valuable. The topography of the Texas Hill Country, married with the deep, cool and clear water of the Frio River, create a setting where his children can explore, actively entertaining themselves.

This month marks the launch of the Casitas, cottage-inspired homes that will be situated throughout the Frio Cañon’s 125-acre wilderness preserve. These homes, which start at $350,000, will enjoy the full amenities of the Frio Cañon community. He was looking for an easily accessible retreat where his wife and five daughters (and eventually their families) could spend holidays and vacations together. He wanted the privacy of a traditional ranch, but one without the sense of isolation that often doesn’t appeal to youngsters.

Bridge Dedication

It is important for Frio Cañon to respect the history of Real County and particularly, to honor the area pioneers that helped form the roots of the local community.  Therefore, we are planning to dedicate the Frio Cañon Bridge in honor of local pioneer, Sabra Adeline Mear.  The bridge will be named "Granny Mear Bridge".  Sabra's son, John Mear, went to Germany and married Maria Mear, who still oversees ranching operations at the John Mear Ranch, which at one point, included the land we now call Frio Cañon.  Below, see a photo of Sabra Adline "Granny Mear" around 1910, in...
