For a homeowner currently building a Shiflet Group Architects-designed vacation home in Frio Cañon, the variety of activities available to him and his family, all four seasons of the year, was valuable. The topography of the Texas Hill Country, married with the deep, cool and clear water of the Frio River, create a setting where his children can explore, actively entertaining themselves.
It is another beautiful day in the Texas Hill Country and what could be better than enjoying this sunny weather, a beautiful view of rolling hills AND eating great food? If you're a fan of this combination, then be grateful you live in, near, around or have access to the Texas Hill Country! If you've got some time on your hands this upcoming weekend, I highly suggest making a trip out to see the amazing things Texas has to offer, including lunch and dinner breaks at any of the places we highlight today.
Hello and welcome to the second part of our Get to Know the Hill Country series! Today, we thought it would be great to discuss some of our absolute favorite places to enjoy delicious food. Let's be honest, we all love food. Every single one of us. Especially me. This weekend, Thanksgiving will usher in the beginning of the holiday season. It's the time of over-eating, enjoying the family and parties, parties and more parties! What better place to celebrate the season than out in the Hill Country?
For those of you who love the Hill Country as much as we do, you may enjoy an article a friend of ours sent us this past week. In May of 2001, the Austin Chronicle published a story about the history of the Texas Hill Country and more specifically, the three cayons that make up the Hill Country: the Sabinal Canyon, the Nueces Canyon and the Frio Canyon. While this article is nine years old, it is still a gold-mine of facts about the area's history.
It is important for Frio Cañon to respect the history of Real County and particularly, to honor the area pioneers that helped form the roots of the local community. Therefore, we are planning to dedicate the Frio Cañon Bridge in honor of local pioneer, Sabra Adeline Mear. The bridge will be named "Granny Mear Bridge". Sabra's son, John Mear, went to Germany and married Maria Mear, who still oversees ranching operations at the John Mear Ranch, which at one point, included the land we now call Frio Cañon. Below, see a photo of Sabra Adline "Granny Mear" around 1910, in...
We’re always looking for new and fun ways to enjoy the Texas Hill Country and we recently discovered the Frio Bat Flight Tour, offered by Hill Country Adventures! Tours are available at sunset (specific time varies due to season- check the website) and in the month of July, are available every evening but Sunday. Check out the 10 to 12 million Mexican free-tailed bats around Frio Cave, near Concan, about ten minutes from Frio Cañon. For reservations and more information, call 830.966.2320 and make sure to check out their website: www.friobatflight.com.
