Summers in the Texas Hill Country are full of special events and holidays. The recent 4th of July holiday was filled with fun on the Frio River.
The weekend started off with everyone at Frio Cañon Friday evening prepping the float for the Fourth of July Parade, which took place in Leakey on Saturday morning. Evening entertainment was the Garner State Park Dance for some, while others chose to stay on the property and have a sing-along at the Frio D cabin.
Saturday morning started with breakfast then the float was hitched to a white ’65 Chevy covered with “I Love Leakey” stickers. The Dalgleish family pulled the float in the parade through downtown Leakey, tossing candy and stickers to the crowd. The parade consists of over 100 homemade floats and takes place every 4th of July in Leakey. It’s followed by an Arts and Crafts Fair at the Leakey Town Square.
Following the parade and fair, Frio Cañon guests cooled off by kayaking, swimming and floating in the Frio River. The Frio Cañon community encompasses approximately 180 acres including a wildlife conservation area, the Frio River, a community park and creek side and waterfront home sites.
Sunday morning was welcomed with a morning riverside service followed by another day of recreational fun on the Frio River. Guests enjoyed a cookout in the riverside Community Park and a trick roping show by Kevin and Bud Fitzpatrick of Bandera.
The weekend ended with a feast of ribs and all the fixings compliments of the Frio Cañon property manager, Rene Martinez.
The next happening at Frio Cañon will be a moonrise, which will take place the weekend of August 13th and 14th.
