Event Recap: Memorial Day in the Texas Hill Country at Frio Cañon (Leakey)

Posted by Abigail Dalgleish on 19 July 2011

Memorial Day in Leakey, Texas is always a big weekend for Frio Cañon homeowners and their guests, and this year was no exception.

The weekend started out with an all-you-can-eat shrimp boil at the Frio Canyon Lodge Outdoor Pavilion in downtown Leakey on Saturday night, followed by a night on the town. Some folks opted for live music with Gary P. Nunn at House Pasture Cattle Company in ConCan, while others chose to attend the Summer Family Dance, an event that takes place every Saturday evening at Garner State Park.

On Sunday, a Riverside Devotional Service was held at a homeowners’ property at Frio Cañon followed by a day of fun on the Frio River. Guests and homeowners’ families enjoyed kayaking, tubing, swimming, fly-fishing and exploring a slice of the Texas Hill Country. The day was filled with fun and food including a mid-day cookout with hamburgers and hot dogs on the bank of the Frio River in the Community Park and property manager Rene’s famous ribs. Sunday ended on a high note with a folk song sing-along, outdoor movies for the kids, star gazing and good company on the Frio Cañon property.

On Monday, guests ventured out to explore the Texas Hill Country on their own. Some chose to stay close to the property by playing a round of golf at The Club atConCan or enjoying lunch at one of the area’s favorite Tex-Mex joints, Mama Chole’s. Some even took day trips to surrounding areas to explore all that the Texas Hill Country has to offer. With the clear, deep Frio River running through the property and so many sites within a short drive – Vanderpool’s Lonestar Motorcycle Museum, Utopia’s craft and antique shops, Garner State Park, Camp Wood Texas and more, there’s never a shortage of things to do.
